Football » Big 12 North 2010 Preview and Predictions
As the countdown continues towards the start of the college football season we move into the big boy conferences. Today we examine the Big 12 North conference and try and predict and preview each team in this conference. With two teams leaving to join other conferences after 2010 this title will be the last of a dying conference. This top heavy conference have several potential candidates to not only win the Big 12 but also have legitimate chance to show up in the BCS title game.
Nebraska Cornhuskers: +200
Maybe the best defense in the country last year and almost the entire starting lineup back for 2010. This unit carried this team to the Big 12 Championship last year and now they are looking to add a much improved offense. Running game will carry the team early in the season until the passing game gets confidence to stretch the field. Only two games on the season should they be underdogs at Washington and Texas at home. Really think this team walks to the championship game in the Big 12 and who knows maybe they can leave for the Big 10 in style with the trophy.
Missouri Tigers: +1200
The only real threat to challenge Nebraska for the North's spot in the championship game. With 18 of 22 starters back for 2010 this team has high hopes for a much bigger bowl than in 2009. Gabbert is a top end QB in this league but still might lack the depth at WR and RB to beat the big boys of the Big 12. This defense was vulnerable at times last year allowing 25 pts per game in 2009. Schedule very touch as they play Oklahoma at home and then Nebraska on road on back to back weeks. Might get some upsets but can't see them beating Nebraska this year.
Kansas State Wildcats: +2000
Bill Snyder was a great story in 2009 but will be up against it to improve on last years record. A defense that at times in 2009 was much better than the talent on the team. Think the lack of speed catches up to them in 2010. On offense this team really were inconsistent and can't imagine that will improve much. Against the spread this team might be worthy of a bet but not a future bet to win the Big 12.
Kansas Jayhawks: +4000
Last year is over thank goodness for Jayhawk fans. Thats the good news the bad news is the talent is still lacking for 2010. We can't find many good things to say about the offense or defense. Best news is they have a great young coach in Turner Gill. One win in the conference last year might be one more than you can expect in 2010. Wait until later in the 2010 season before wagering with this team.
Colorado Buffaloes: +5000
Next year this team will be in the Pac 10 and they look to leave the Big 12 in style. Coach Hawkins is on the hot seat for his job. Good news for him is they have a nice set of young WR's and DB's. In fact they might have 4 future NFL players in these groups. Problem is QB play has been an issue and it looks like Hawkins son Cody will be the starter to start 2010. This team can't win the North but they can upset several of the middle of the pack on their way to a .500 season.
Iowa State Cyclones: +8000
The toughest schedule of any of the Big 12 teams will make it hard to see the improvement that this team will have in 2010. Really improved depth should make this team very tough even as a big underdog in several games. The offense has had some rumors out that they will be really good but until they receive reliable QB play we will wait to wager on them.
Really like the future wager for Nebraska to win the North and the Championship game in the big 12 for 2010. Also Nebraska is my darkhorse to be in the BCS game come January 2011.
